The kidds are allright! #1 #2

Yesterday I nominated my previous assitant Josephine Sivertzen 21, to the Tillväxtverket and Vinnova Advisoryboard nomination, that is to advise them on how to suppport young peoples innovation. It’s open until the 30th of November, nominate here!

I nominated Josephine due to the fact that she worked for me as an asstistant during my time at SYRUP in Stockholm, and helped me with my projects RunAlong.se and GeekGirlMeetup. The young dudette is a whitty writer, a clever thinker and she understands social media and the art of a good story.

Today I nominted Anton Johansson, 21, BizDev, strategy and communication at the brilliant start-up Twingly. Right now he´s also an aspiring e-commerce entrepreneur with Headler.se. This young dude has the energy of few, is an idea-generator like few and always has the finger on the tech pulse.

The first time i met Therese Mannheimer, was with Judith Wolst, at the first 24 Hour Business Camp back in 2008, in the middle of the night hacking our projects.. Awesomeness, and when we started GeekGirlMeetup.com, Therese, the networker she is, was sending us contacts that worked wonders. With Brainspiration in her backpack, and consulting at Pool she felt the need for her a tool to cover the timeconsuming social media coverage work, and thats how Lissly came along. She called Simon Sundén, her friend and Stockholm based SEO guy, and they started scetching, to later get  a firm in to build it, and heres the interview. In Swedish.

Therese, du är ju social-media-strategy-wonder-chick på Pool, och nu lanserar du en egen tjänst tillsammans med vår kompis Simon Sundén. Berätta, hur gick det till?
Jag utgick väldigt mycket ifrån mina egna behov och just i det här fallet så är ett av alla mina uppdrag att bevaka mina kunders varumärken och aktivitet på den sociala webben och det är en väldigt tidskrävande aktivitet. Jag utvärderade de verktyg som fanns, såg att jag inte fann det jag behövde, varken i bredd och eller pris. De täcker inte in tillräckligt många källor, är för dyra och har på något sätt inte sin utgångspunkt i branschen. Det är ofta större amerikanska företag som knoppar av någon liten buzzverksamhet som sedan säljs med krängare… Det var inte vad jag behövde så vips så startade vi en egen, det var verkligen inte svårare än så.

När bestämde du dig? hur lång tid tog det att går från ide till gårdagens lansering?
Jag bestämde mig direkt och kontaktade Simon och frågade om han ville vara med. Det ville han så vi körde igång direkt på vintern förra året. Jag tror det var vinter, det snöade…

Ja, och hur känns det nu när det snöar igen och du har en färdig produkt?
galet häftigt. Att det går att göra utan en spänn med ren jävlar anamma. Coolt. Jag är lite impad av oss om jag får vara helt ärlig… hehe

Coolt jag är grymt impad av er, sist vi snackades var i sommar och du höll på med Lissly, sen har man hört lite var stans att det är på g, så det är grymt imponerande och kul att höra att ni är igång.
Bara så roligt att det faktiskt går med lite energi och när alla går in head on. Det är så lätt att direkt tro att man behöver cash… eller hur? Inte alla förunnat att ha utvecklare som vill göra det på risk dock…

Exakt, man klarar sig rätt bra utan, och det finns fördelar med att det tar tid, man hinner tänka igenom, göra fel, göra rätt, bygga om etc…
Japp för och nackdelar med allt men jag tror att det i det här fallet var rätt beslut, vi behövde ju inte pengarna och det andra alternativet var då att inte göra det pga tids och pengabrist, nu i efterhand var det ju aldrig ett riktigt alternativ…

Hur lång tid tog det?
Det har väl tagit snart ett år men keep in mind att vi gjort allt med skarvtid..

Hur många är ni?
Vi är tre delägare. Det är jag, Simon och våra utvecklare som äger via företaget Entertainity.

Beätta om arbetsprocessen?
Processen har varit väldigt organisk. Jag och Simon har utgått ifrån våra behov och inte andra tjänsters erbjudande. Vi plottade upp vad vi kände att vi behövde för att göra jobbet ordentligt, vad vi ville erbjuda i alla faser, vad vi ville skulle ingå och vad vi kunde tänka oss att betala för det. Sedan började vi samla in källor, samla in API:er och bygga  basen till det vi skulle täcka. Samtidigt satte vi igång designern som fick helt fira tyglar vilket ju blev bra… Vi har skött nästan allt i docs och haft veckoliga möten samt skypemöten. Eftersom både jag och Simon har dagjobb så fick det lov att bli flexibelt. Sen har många morgnar och kvällar gått åt till buggrapportering, fix, korrläsning, designfix och annat… En väldigt organisk process skulle jag vilja kalla det för.

Komer det finnas affiliate?
I hope so! Vi erbjuder ju redan nu en affiliatelösning iform av Whitelabel. Där kan byråer, agenturer och andra större företag med många varumärken köpa en licens till Lissly som de kan branda själva. Dessutom så tittar vi på ett API och håller på att sätta upp former för återförsäljare och rev share.

Kommer det finnas affiliate för småföretagare som skickar kunder vidare till er?
Japp det siktar vi på, som sagt så håller vi på att sätta upp former för återförsäljare av olika slag!

Livestream from GeekGirlMeetup STHLM evening sessions Autumn 2010

During this spring(2010) I started GeekGirlMeetup evening sessions becuase we felt that we needed some hands-on practical session on web, code and startups, outside the two-day conference we host twice a year. We ended up having full house everytime, we hade frontende-code, start-up night, and backend-code during the spring sessions.

Concidering that we had 70 participants at every evening session, and 100 per day during the 2 day conferance, we were today very happy to have 89 viewers of our LiveStream today, the first eveningsession for the Autumn, held at Valtech with 70 participants. A pretty good ratio.

@mariasoderberg held a session on frontend-coding, @inselhai on SEO and @animalin held a session on what the future of building themes was. Pretty awesome.

A big thanks to @heidiupdate for moderating, and @emmakoszinowski for Streaming, so that the rest of us/you can see.

A few guiding points:

  • You dont need to be a programmer to join us, you need curiosity. There are also different nights with different directions, we encourage curiosity, its rewarding.
  • Anyone can help out. We encourage you to share your ideas and thought with us, so that we can continue to create the best GeekGirlmeetup for this Autumn. We need smart, curious, challenging thinkers and most all, doers to join us. Since our im is to create new networks and new rolemodels were having an openhouse for people intrested in organizing the future of GeekGirlMeetup. Next meeting is on the 29th, at Fröjd, Stockholm. I cant be there, but thats the beauty of this network, we make it work (even if everyonecant make the meeting or skype meeting), just look how far we have come.

    Disruptive code was by far one of the better conferances of 2010, probably becuase it was so niched on code. Amongst the speakers I had chance to see there were:

  • Brucelawson @brucel hosting a talk on html5
  • Malin Ströman @malinstroman held a talk about her experiances from developing new features, keeping focus and encouraging user-developer insight from her time at the startup Stardoll.
  • Alex Olwal, KTH on Augumented Reality, a very well executed presentation, covering a wider perspective of how far you can stretch it
  • Anna Oscarsson, Kvittar.se, @annaoscarsson & Linus from Flattr.com were in a intresting panel discussion about the future of money.

    • And a standing ovation to Annika Lidne, @annika + crew, especially Jennifer for putting on the show.

    SSWC Social Swedish Web camp 2 – 2010

    Jaiku - the host(ess)

    Social Swedish Webcamp is held yearly at Tjärö, an island outside Karlshamn i Sweden, where 404 (!) participants gathered this year to talk about the future of the internet, how we can use it as a tool to create a better society. Here are a few clips, rants and raves from an epic weekend that i have been a part of for the second time around. What I love about it most its like an eco system of its own, talks and camping, never has the startup and tech/media elite been so domestically downsized – and we liked it.

    My highlights included:

    • Good company sporting the islands highest cliff: Johan Ronnestam, Tobias Brasilius, and Mattias Östmar. Thanks for the edit @martinkallstrom.
    • @skjutsgruppen who was kind enough to lend me his bike one day earlier in Örebro, i dont think i would have made it to the train to the island otherwise.
    • @piratforlaget created the book, thank you Mathias, for asking me to participtae in it. The SSWC 2010 book, buy it here, or read my chapter in the book here.
    • Also rediscovering that both @KimTaro and @Maria_s worked with with TSIS, tokyo style Stockholm, back in the days, konichiwa!
    • Tenting with @antrop and @mariarichardsson #domesticdonsize #domestic upgrade.
    • Meaningful talks with @kinnajohansson, @annaoscarsson, @paulamarttila, @inselhai @davidbismark and @hanneskirgård about what’s worth it – and whats not.
    • Having the @binero Erik Arnberg marketing director serve me coffe in the morning to guarantee their uptime. Copy-kitch or genious, probably the later, and the coffe got me UP.
    • Coding, unfinished thoughts, rants and raves with @KimTaro @detNya, @jakob and @chronix.
    • A standing ovation and kudos for making this happen again to the founders Kristin Heionen and Tomas Wennströms, and their dog Jaiku + everyonewho helped out.
    • I missed #mrkrax
    • This is an uncomplete list, there are a few more things that fit in here.

    If i was to complete my wishlist for next year, it goes like this:

    • more detalied tech talks, preferably on Ruby on Rails or Sinatra.
    • A two day conf (i think we can agree on that to squeese out as much time for valuble thought, talks and sessions)
    • Al respect to the grid. It has its beauty, but when you reach over 300 people, a need for overview steps in. I suggest people sending in talks in advance, and then being ablt to show intrest for talks. This way also enables people to discower that if two peopl are talking about A, maybe one of then can go for thet slim and niched talk B, instead of using up airtime, giving another A talk. Check out Reboot for another way of doing it, solution in drupal. At GeekGirlMeetup.com we have used this way of working, with out the “showing intrest” talk, where @mariasoderberg has had the guidning role of handling contributions to the scheme and grid, guidning poeple with their talks and putting together a wonderful program.

    Nästan varje startup börjar med ett svar på något som är ofullständigt, något som kan göras bättre eller något som inte finns. Man finner en lösning på det ofullständiga eller så skapar man något som man själv behöver och vill testa. Har man tur lyckas man tillföra substansiellt värde.

    Det krävs att man lyssnar mer till sig själv, och mindre på annat samtidigt som man är uppmärksam på sina behov och undviker bekvämlighetsfällan. Oavsett om det är en egen byrå man vill starta eller en egen startup, så är det viktigt att dividera med sig själv – gör jag detta för mig själv, eller för andra? Vem blir nöjd, vem blir glad, vem blir jag omtyckt av om jag gör detta? Gör jag det för att jag inte kan låta bli, för att jag anser att det saknas något väsentligt i världen? Kan jag låta världen gå vidare utan detta? Stannar tiden när jag jobbar med detta?
    “Strategi är att säga nej”, säger Tom Kosnik, PhD på Stanford, på en föreläsning jag deltog i hösten 2009. Han har så rätt, för det är så enkelt att säga ja till allt  – gå på alla happenings, på alla fester, slänga in en feature till i sin tjänst. Men Less är More, och det svåra är att ta bort en feature, välja bort en fest, säga nej till ett välbetalt jobb, trotsa sin omgivning när man säger upp sig under lågkonkan. “Du ska väl inte säga nej till ett välbetalt jobb?” frågar en del, men det beror ju på vad man försakar förstås. Vad är din dröm värd? Vågar du sätta en prislapp på att inte genomföra den? Kommer pengarna du tjänar när du inte genomför din dröm att vara värda lika mycket? Det du ger uppmärksamhet växer, och det är då du vet svaret på *37 Signals eminenta fråga: “Do you want it bad enough?”.
    Konsten är att finna sin stil i vardagen. Vi finner andras uttrampade stil varje dag, på folks Twitter, Facebookprofiler, på deras bloggar, men främst genom deras verk, deras världsförbättrande livsdrömmar som de valt att aktivt förverkliga. Verken de lät bli att gå ut för, verken de slutade att kolla på tv för och nyttjade timmarna till att programmera. Det finns inga ursäkter att skjuta på sina drömmar. Så länge du är frisk, så kan du alltid börja skriva en novell innan du börjar skriva en bok, bara för att det är så kul att du inte kan låta bli.
    Jag hade en föreläsare** som sa, att vi satt på hennes föreläsning och dog. Vid föreläsningens slut skulle vi vara 3 timmar närmare döden. Det må låta morbid, sa hon, men hon uppmanade oss att om vi hade något viktigare för oss de närmaste 3 timmarna skulle vi gå och göra det. Alla stannade kvar. Tillsammans med henne tog vi på oss möjlighetsglasögonen och börja tänkte på vad i livet som är värt att dö för, för att vi i praktiken skulle spendera stora delar av vårt liv med att jobba antingen för våra drömmar eller för andras. Varför inte välja det som vi tyckte var absolut viktigast och mest meningsfullt?

    På Kaospiloternas 3:e våning, i hallutrymmet innan man klättrar upp på taket, sitter citatet, vilket alltid påminner mig om att det inte finns några ursäkter. Det handlar om att välja att stanna hemma de där nätterna istället för att gå ut, en dag av helgen eller kanske varannan helg? Man tar eget ansvar för genomförandet av sina drömmar. Antingen sitter man på stranden och tittar på medan de andra surfar eller så nöter man våg efter våg tills man tar sin första sweetaste våg, för att sedan avancera.
    Varsågod, testa att göra det du drömmer om, det är tvekandet som dödar dig.

    GeekGirlMeetup.com is a webconferance I founded with Andie Nordgren with aims to create more female rolemodels and networks within web, code and startups in Sweden. Thru the years we have had lot of help from people helping us with taking time to make it happen, by coding, organizing in other areas of Sweden, sending us sponsors and most of all, just putting those extra hours of extra effort.

    @Emma Koszinowski and I filmed some voices on GeekGirlmeetup, this may 2010 and gave it a brief cut. For the ones not familiar with the concept, heres one angle of it. This is in Swedish, maybe more will follow in English.
